Flavours and tastes
  • This cake is very sweet.            
  • The pumpkin purée is a litlle bitter.       
  • Rick wanted a cup of tea, but the milk was sour.
  • Indian food is so hot/spicy, I can hardly eat it.
  • The chili peppers were mild, but Sarah still didn't like them.
  • Rebecca said the food at that restaurant is bland. They don't use any salt.
  • My mum makes all the food very salty.
  • Eating sugary cereal in the morning can elevate blood sugar to an unhealthy level.
  • In my opinion, cakes made by fondant are sickly.
  • A savory smell drifted from the kitchen.
  • This dessert is very tasty.  Mmmmm Yummy!
  • The chocolate cake looked delicious, but it was disappointingly tasteless.

1. Try to guess the meaning of the previous flavours and tastes




General appearance, presentation and quality
  • These chips are terribly greasy.
  • This meat is over-cooked/ overdone/ undercooked/ underdone.
  • British cooking can be very stodgy.
  • Mm, this chiken's done to a turn.
  • These pistachio nuts are terribly more-ish.

2. Try to guess the meaning of the previous words in bold.




3. Use the taste and flavour words to describe the following:
    • Indian Curry
    • Pizza
    • Sea water
    • An unripe apple
    • A cup of tea with five spoonfuls of sugar
    • Strong black coffee with no sugar
    • Factory-made white bread


4. Speaking and Writing time!
Talk with your teacher about how you like the food taste and which kind of food you like the most. 
If you are with a partner, you can have a role play dialogue in which one is the waiter and the other is the customer and you have to explain how your food is.
